Elliott Ferguson, president and chief executive of Destination DC, which markets the city, said he expects Washington to move forward in pursuing World Cup matches. With 48 countries and 80 matches, the 2026 World Cup will be the largest ever. However, if the NFL team builds a new facility before the World Cup arrives, it would probably supersede the Landover venue. Stadiums equipped with artificial turf must commit to installing grass several months before the World Cup.
