Corporate VC is different from traditional VC in that it pursues strategic benefits not only financial returns, and as a growing space presents an opportunity to plug some of the funding gap in the African ecosystem, according to Martin Maina, corporate venture practice lead at Dream VC. “Corporate VC is different from traditional VC. Corporate VC doesn’t only pursue financial returns, but also pursues strategic returns,” Maina said. Corporate VC is still in its infancy in Africa, although with the funding gap still evident on the continent, Maina says the trend has a potentially big role to play in the ecosystem. He says more and more corporate VC is coming up in Africa, especially in South Africa where the trend has been on the rise for the past decade or so, nonetheless it is a relatively untapped area with the potential for substantial growth.
