Coroner's inquiries into suicide deaths were increasingly taking longer to complete, with inquiries taking between 100 and 200 days longer during the 2015 financial year than during the 2011 financial year. But the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Justice kept good records of suicide deaths, meaning the number of suicide deaths in New Zealand were accurately reported. The Auditor-General's report Collecting and using information about suicide found some information was collected and used well, however, there were gaps. But the Auditor-General's report found the Ministry of Justice and others needed to help coroners reduce the average time taken to complete their inquiries.
