The coronavirus killed more people than cancer, dementia and heart disease combined in April, shocking statistics today revealed. Dementia killed 69,748 people in 2018, according to past statistics from the ONS, and COVID-19 has killed almost half as many people in just two months. From 12,526 coronavirus deaths that happened during that period, 9,039 (72 per cent) occurred within a care home. This has been most noticeable in the nation's care homes, which care for around 400,000 people, approximately three quarters of whom have dementia. 'Dementia is now the main underlying condition for COVID-19 deaths, accounting for one in five of total deaths.
