Tuesday's figures showed 44 new deaths recorded in England, three in Wales, and no new deaths in Scotland or Northern Ireland. The last time the daily hospital death toll was that high was on July 11, when 47 died. The number of hospital deaths rose by 10 yesterday, and 18 on Monday. Most of the deaths reported in the last 24 hours were in England's north. They included 18 in England's North-West, 15 in the North-East and Yorkshire, seven in the Midlands and three in London.
