Coronavirus: Surrogate babies caught up overseas due to pandemic get streamlined court process

Surrogate babies born overseas usually take months to get New Zealand citizenship. The Family Court has streamlined the process. Babies born overseas to surrogates have prompted the Family Court to look at streamlining the adoption application process after the Covid-19 pandemic threw their future into doubt. Principal Family Court Judge Jacquelyn Moran issued a statement on Wednesday saying the court had been alerted to the plight of a number of parents who had babies due to be born in the next six months. Two judges have been dedicated to the new process which has a maximum six-week timeframe and includes the ability to file documents electronically.
