Coronavirus: Nearly 5000 cars turned around at Auckland police checkpoints

There’s been a large spike in the number of cars turned away at police checkpoints in north and south Auckland. As of 4pm on Tuesday, police had processed 86,685 vehicles through the 13 different checkpoints, and a total of 4781 cars had been turned around. Assistant police commissioner Richard Chambers said the numbers showed a significantly high number of cars had been turned away on Monday and Tuesday compared to days prior. Dominico Zapata/Stuff Defence force staff in PPE and hi-vis help police at checkpoints at the Bombay border. Police are taking a firm approach when it came to letting people in and out of Auckland, Chambers said.
