Auckland has lost out on about $15 million for transport projects due to a sharp drop in fuel consumption during the first coronavirus lockdown. Petrol and diesel sold in Auckland is subject to the regional fuel tax of 11.5 cents a litre including GST. Alden Williams/Stuff Less fuel being pumped in lockdown has hit Auckland’s regional fuel tax income. “Our funding comes from a mix of sources, so it’s hard to isolate the impact of a regional fuel tax reduction,” Auckland Transport chief financial officer Mark Laing said. Auckland is the only region with a dedicated fuel tax, which was introduced in 2018.
