There are now more cases per 100,000 people in non-metropolitan counties than there are in metropolitan areas, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of Johns Hopkins University and Census Bureau data. That is a shift from earlier in the pandemic, when there were more cases per 100,000 people in metropolitan areas and non-metropolitan areas. More than 850 deaths were reported Thursday, according to Johns Hopkins data, down from more than 1,100 a day before. As of Thursday, the seven-day moving average of deaths had reached 763, the highest level in a month. That metric has outpaced the 14-day average nine of the past 14 days, suggesting fatalities are rising.
