Coronavirus: April international arrivals down by 550,700

According to Stats NZ, there were a combined 38,200 arrivals and departures in April, compared with nearly 1.2 million for the same period last year. In April, the first full month of border restrictions, arrivals numbered just 6300, down by 550,700 compared with April 2019. Population indicators manager Tehseen Islam said the remainder included family members of New Zealand citizens, essential workers, and other exempt travellers. But Stats NZ said border restrictions and widespread flight cancellations related to Covid-19 meant many people were unable to leave. Net migration of New Zealand citizens for the year ended April 2020 was provisionally estimated at 11,100.
