Cork man who assaulted visitor, leaving him with serious injuries, admits it was unprovoked attack

After hearing an outline of the facts of the unprovoked assault, Judge John King said of defendant, 20-year-old Dean McCarthy, of 22 Fernway, Classis Lake, Ballincollig, Cork: “Without a shadow of a doubt he is in custodial sentence territory. Sergeant John Kelleher said the injured party had been drinking with friends at An Bróg on Oliver Plunkett Street when he decided to leave. “During the course of the assault taking place, two females who were passing tried to assist the injured party. “Later [when defendant] was shown CCTV, he identified himself from the footage and made admissions that it was an unprovoked attack, that the injured party had not been aggressive towards them, that he struck the injured party on two occasions and accepts that the injuries sustained were serious. He also showed remorse and hoped that the injured party was OK.”Sentencing of Dean McCarthy was put back until March 31 to allow time for preparation of a probation report.
