Armed police cordoned off a large area of Hāwera on Tuesday morning after reports of a man with a gun. The armed police operation in Hāwera is over with cordons taken down and officers leaving the scene. Cordons had been established in the surrounding area including a section of State Highway 3 on Waihi Rd. A large gathering of police was seen on Waihi Rd, nearer to Rimu St.Penny and Fred Mitchell, owners of Kiwi Court Motel on Waihi Rd, said they were stuck inside, along with their guests.
