Cops using CCTV, spot checks to curb transborder smuggling, corruption in its ranks

KUALA LUMPUR: The use of closed-circuit television (CCTV) monitoring and surprise checks will be the key focus of the police force as it cracks down on transborder smuggling and corruption involving its own personnel. On Saturday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador said 10 senior police officers and 33 lower-ranking personnel were involved in trans-border smuggling and corruption. He said legal and non-legal action had been taken against those nabbed for such activities since 2014. These include disciplinary action as well as barring their promotion, withholding salary increments, fines and transfers to inactive police posts. “For this year, two senior officers were identified to have committed offences, whereas last year action was taken against 18 rank and file personnel, comprising two senior officers and 16 lower ranked personnel,” Hamid said.
