Cooking oil still cheaper than mineral water, says minister - Nation

PETALING JAYA: A family of five will have to fork out about RM100 extra for cooking oil per year following the rationalisation move by the government, the Dewan Rakyat was told. In comparison, the price of mineral water exceeds that of cooking oil depending on how much one drinks, said Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin. He explained that it is estimated that an average person consumes about 1.5kg of cooking oil per month (or RM2.25 per person.) Effective this month, consumers have to pay the market price for bottled cooking oil but those sold in bags remain at RM2.50 per kilogram. "As previously announced, there is still subsidy for cooking oil but the government only introduced a rationalisation plan so that the quota will reach the targetted group.
