Controversial Mudtopia Festival not set to stickBENN BATHGATE/STUFF Organisers said the inaugural Mudtopia could be considered a success. Mudtopia organisers say the event could be considered a success - but are still looking to wash their hands of the controversial festival after an inaugural year loss of more than half-a-million dollars. In a report on the Rotorua Lakes Council-run event, council arts and culture manager Stewart Brown recommends council explore "opportunities to support an event specialist who may wish to own and deliver the Mudtopia festival in the future at no risk to council". Brown said 14,000 people attended the festival and that from a 'festival experience view point', "the event could be considered a success". In total the festival sold 1500 tickets, gave away 12,000 tickets to residents and 3000 to sponsors and suppliers.
