Contract positions are becoming the norm in many fields, offering flexibility to some but challenges to many others. For example, universities are relying on increasing numbers of contract faculty to teach their courses. It is not good for those starting out and even worse for those who have found themselves trapped in the limbo of contract work for decades. York University contract faculty went on strike this spring, protesting the lack of tenured job for academics. Increasingly, new PhD graduates are relying on contract positions for their entire livelihoods due to a lack of new full-time positions.
