Consumer rights directorate recommends importing onion

The Directorate of National Consumers’ Rights Protection (DNCRP) requested the Ministry of Commerce to allow the import of onions to control the unrest in the onion market ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha. AHM Safiquzzaman, director general (DG) of the consumer rights directorate, wrote to the senior secretary of the commerce ministry on Tuesday. The directorate termed the hike of onion price as unusual as the country has produced enough onions and has huge stocks. As per the directorate, onions are being sold at Tk 1,500-1,600 per 40kg at different places in Pabna and Faridpur. The directorate recommended importing onions from India in the light of the experience of previous years.
