La Brea Tar PitsWhile excavating sandy sediments during metro construction last month, workers recovered two bone fragments that were once part of Southern California's former inhabitants—oversized mammals. Most of the known diversity has been found nearby at the famed La Brea Tar Pits site. The sloth bone may belong to a species called Harlan’s ground sloth (Paramylodon harlani), the largest and most commonly found giant sloth in the area that tipped the scales at 1,500 pounds. If these bones are the same age as those from the La Brea Tar Pits, which they likely are, they could be around 40,000 years old.
