Conservatives concerned by guidance telling judges to avoid Federalist Society: 'Smacks of censorship'

A longtime member and volunteer leader of the Federalist Society told Fox News that the opinion "smacks of censorship." "This is an attempt to make it unacceptable for federal judges to be members fo the Federalist Society and it's part of a broader series of attacks on the Federalist Society, in particular, coming from political sources," Severino told Fox News. The Federalist Society has amassed significantly more power than the liberal ACS, particularly as its co-chairman Leonard Leo has had President Trump's ear on judicial nominations. Additionally, the ACS does advocate for policies, unlike the Federalist Society, making the conservative and libertarian lawyers' group unique in that respect. Erickson is a Trump appointee who spoke at a Federalist Society event as recently as October.
