The Nature Conservancy of Canada has bought a parcel of land near Fernie, B.C., in the Rocky Mountains in a bid to protect prime territory for grizzly bears, elk and cutthroat trout. The land parcel is a 43-hectare farm at the valley bottom along the Elk River south of Fernie. Now, facilitated by Deb de Hoog, granddaughter of the Fitzens, the Nature Conservancy of Canada acquired the land and remaining buildings via a partial donation and partial land purchase for $800,000. (Nature Conservancy of Canada)The purchase comes at a time when land on the valley floor is being snapped up for development. (Nature Conservancy of Canada)Around a third of the project's funding, amounting to $287,000, was provided by the federal government's Natural Areas Conservation Program.
