Conquering Bluey a challenge for highland heavies

Callum McConachy will be among the highland heavies title contenders at the Rural Games this weekend. The Palmerston North teacher is one of the strongmen lining up at the New Zealand Rural Games’ highland heavies competition between 12 and 2pm on Sunday, part of three days of country coming to the centre of town, beginning on Friday. The heavies competition is a mixture of traditional highland games activities, such as the caber toss, and rural activities, such as the ute push. Last year McConachy came fifth-equal and is in good form this year, having come second at the recent national highland games. Rural Games founder Steve Hollander said there was a focus on youth this year, and the goal was to lift interest in the rural economy and the sports.
