Another example of Opposition unity was manifested when SP-BSP cooperated with each other during Phulpur and Gorakhpur by-elections. The present result shows that JD(S) did well at the expense of the Congress Party in Old Mysore region . It also lost a large number of rural seats and party did not do well in coastal, central and Hyderabad-Karnataka. Vajpaye could not politically function as PM despite being the single largest party as other regional parties ganged up against him. Despite Congress being weak, Karnataka verdict will embolden regional parties to come together and tie up against the BJP.
