But senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, who has been two-term Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, said the move could burden the States. Quoting Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ statement made on Friday, Mr. Chidambaram said on Twitter, “Bringing petrol and diesel under GST will lower prices, said Maharashtra CM, Devendra Fadnavis. “Modi ji is now proposing to bring petrol/diesel under GST so that States take the burden. And after GST, these are the only major sources for the State to collect revenues. Though the GST Council was meant to debate the issue sometime back, it is yet to officially take it up.
