Congress alleges discrepancies in National Register of Citizens

PATNA: Congress legislature party in Assam has moved the Registrar General of India & Census Commissioner alleging discrepancies in the verification process of the National Register of Citizens NRC ) in Assam. The memorandum stated, "Sir, it has become a matter of great concern for us that the State NRC Authority, headed by the State Coordinator, NRC, Shri Prateek Hajela, has resorted to constantly changing the goalposts in the NRC update process. In short, the NRC is an exercise to determine who is an Indian citizen as per the provisions of the Assam Accord. There is sufficient prima facie evidence about a concerted drive to exclude bona-fide citizens, especially religious and linguistic minorities, from the final draft of the NRC.It is learnt that a list has been sent to NRC Seva Kendras from the State NRC Authority which suggests non-inclusion of certain names in the NRC. The extent to which the rot has set in can be gauged from the fate of two members of a family belonging to the linguistic minority community, who are residents of Kulidunga village under Ooluoni police station in Kaliabor. Prahlad Das and Ashutosh Das had had their names included in the first draft of the NRC and they had been voting in successive elections."
