Conductor Holly Mathieson. Photo / Martin StewartREVIEW:Fantastique, the title of Thursday's New Zealand Symphony Orchestra concert, may have been taken from Berlioz's great symphony, but it was a just description for an evening of thoughtfully programmed musical enchantment. We were well primed for the opium-laced fantasies of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique with two well-chosen contemporary dreamscapes. Although I'm not sure that the narrative of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique quite warrants Mathieson's description of it as "very silly, slightly strange and at times a little bit creepy", she unleashed just the virtuoso performance this iconic score demands.
