★★★★☆Patkop and Solgab sounds like a firm of Brooklyn pawnbrokers. In fact it’s a jaw-dropping musical duo — bold, bracing and sometimes a bit berserk — making Bach sound as provocative as Xenakis and the avant-garde miniatures of Jörg Widmann as playful as a Scarlatti sonata. They are the Moldovan violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja and the Argentine cellist Sol Gabetta, each rightly acclaimed as a daring soloist (the Wigmore was packed with fans of each), but truly wild when brought together. If pushed I would guess that Kopatchinskaja is the slightly more dominant partner: her inimitable questing, ever-fluctuating style forever taking her in unexpected directions to which Gabetta, with her more grounded timbre and manner, responded with lightning reflexes and mental alertness. Not everything convinced.
