Concerns raised about welfare of Southland elderly

Concerns raised about welfare of Southland elderlyHannah McLeod/Stuff Age Concern manager Janette Turner is calling on Southlanders to keep an eye out for their elderly neighbours after two pensioners were left for days without help in their homes in the past fortnight. Southlanders should check on their elderly neighbours and if they have concerns, call for help, Age Concern says. While it was not uncommon for Age Concern to be asked to check on elderly residents, Turner wanted communities to be more vigilant and to reach out if they had any doubt about an elderly person's safety at all. Age Concern would then visit the person's home, contact hospitals, and then police if the person couldn't be found, Turner said. Age Concern could visit people in their homes, offer them rides to social outings, or even just provide blankets and heaters, Turner said.
