Cona was cajoled into the game

Broadhurst Cona (73), also known as “Broadness”, from Gugulethu was tricked into playing rugby by his rugby friend Joseph Hali in 1965 and retired in 1986 at the age of 39. Cona is a former Western Province and South African Rugby Board prop and started playing rugby late in life. Cona made the WP team for the 1970 South African Games and played in the season’s last Test against the Proteas in Paarl. Cona played many matches for the SA Bantu Team, which later became known as the Leopards, with Mbiko. In 1972 Cona played against Fran Cotton’s England team, which toured South Africa and gained from each experience against overseas teams.
