Complaints about dubious advertisements on the internet have surged in the last year amid concerns that social media giants are not being open about how they deal with the problem. A record 14,257 internet adverts were reported to the advertising regulator in 2018, an increase of 38 per cent from the previous year. Chairman David Currie said the ASA had been in discussions with tech giants such as Facebook and Google but that barriers remained. We need to find a way of working more closely with the online platforms on this issue. Given all the concerns that parents and others have, they recognise they need to take action.’
