Politics of Sunday, 5 January 2020Source: www.ghanaweb.comCompiling a new biometric voters register unreasonable - Right Alliance-Africa to ECJean Mensah, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of GhanaThe Right Alliance-Africa (RAA) has expressed their displeasure at the proposal of the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile new biometric voters register given the very short period to the 2020 general elections. According to RAA, it is unnecessary for the Electoral Commission to compile a new register as the current one has not lost its credibility. The civil society organization, however, recommended that "the EC should rather channel resources on upgrading the verification system to improve the efficiency in voting rather than the extravagant expenses to be used in procuring a new biometric voters register." Moreover, the consequential issue to be dealt with is whether or not the existing biometric voter's register is credible. From the statement of the EC, the reason to compile a new biometric voters register is not the lack of the credible existing register but rather the register is ‘overstretched’.
