Waikaia Commercial Hotel owner Wendy-Jane Williamson said the opening of a new mine would be positive news for the township. A company is hoping to mine for alluvial gold near Waikaia, that may provide up to 15 jobs as well as hire local contractors. According to the consent application, the mine will directly employ 12 to 15 people and contract local businesses in its operations. The company acknowledged Waikaia/Winding Creek is a historical alluvial gold mining area with several of the district’s families tracing their ancestors to gold mining forebears. The resource consent application has been publicly notified by the Southland District Council.
