Company behind Foulden Maar bid collapses, putting application to mine on hold

Foulden Maar, home to 23 million-year-old fossils was to be mined for stock food. The site included Foulden Maar – a volcanic crater where fish, insects and plants have become fossilised under layers of organic matter. Kimberley Collins, of Save Foulden Maar, told Stuff the focus for the group would now move towards public ownership of the site. "So we can protect Foulden Maar in its entirety and in perpetuity for scientific research." She questioned why the company would take on Foulden Maar if it was having financial difficulties.
