While most companies have set ways of assessing performance, many do a lousy job of sizing up someone’s potential. That’s why Mr. Dockser hired his Uber driver after meeting him during a business trip in Chicago a couple of years ago. Mr. Dockser says he asked the driver if he had any other jobs. “We made him an offer on the spot,” Mr. Dockser says. “He worked out great,” and the company is exploring rehiring him, Mr. Dockser says.
