The Hanmer Springs community is being asked to come up with a plan for the Queen Mary Hospital to restore the heart of the township. STACY SQUIRES/STUFF The community of Hanmer Springs is being asked for ideas for the old Soldiers' Block. Queen Mary started out as a convalescent home for soldiers who suffered shell shock or injury in World War I. The Canterbury District Health Board has proposed selling the part of the Queen Mary site it still owns, a 1639-square-metre section with former staff lodging house.
