Committee OKs proposal to give Don River Park a new Anishinaabe name

It’s been called many names over the years: The Lower Don Parklands. The Don River Valley Park. But now the network of small parks near the Don River in Toronto’s east end will be officially known as the Wonscotonach Parklands. The city’s parks and environment committee gave the renaming proposal a green light last week and sent it to the council for final approval later this month. Another park near Yonge-Wellesley will be named after Dr. Lillian McGregor, a nurse and community leader from the Whitefish River First Nation who was the first Indigenous woman to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Toronto.
