DES MOINES, Iowa—The 2020 Democratic primary field could be the party’s largest since 1976, when former Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter emerged from a crowded field of 17 candidates in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal. As many as two dozen candidates or more could soon be canvassing Iowa’s 99 counties, holding rallies and working the living rooms and small-town restaurants in the first-in-the-nation caucus state, aiming to unseat President Trump.
