Collecting shoes to save livesJohn Hawkins/STUFF Shelly Ballantine is one of the volunteers collecting shoes for suicide awareness campaign being held in Invercargill on Sunday. Across the country, volunteers are collecting 579 pairs of shoes to represent each New Zealander lost to suicide in 2016. The first event will be held on Saturday at Stirling Point, Bluff, followed by another in Invercargill on Sunday. Coalition co-ordinator Simon Oosterman said the shoes would provide a visual reminder of the toll suicide had on communities. In Invercargill, volunteer Shelly Ballantine has been one of the people collecting shoes for the event at Queens Park on Sunday.
