A front is expected to move from the Tasman Sea onto the south of the South Island late on Tuesday or early on Wednesday. A MetService spokesman said a low associated with the front was expected to cross over the central South Island on late Wednesday or Thursday, with a larger low lying west of the country late Thursday. He said there was moderate confidence that warning amounts of rain could fall in Fiordland during Tuesday and Wednesday and in Westland during Wednesday. "As the first low crosses the South Island, it is expected to lower the snow level in the east, with significant snow about the higher ground and some falls as low as 400m to 500m." However, he did not believe enough snow would fall at 500m or below, to justify a warning in northern Southland, Otago or Canterbury.
