We’ve been hearing a lot lately about the omnipresent threat to reproductive freedom from sinister ultra-conservative Canadian political parties. The Mifegymiso combo packet was approved by Health Canada in 2015, but the approval was accompanied by unusual and somewhat puzzling restrictions. But with the onerous Health Canada conditions, the pills required three steps of care — ultrasound, pills, follow-up exam to make sure the pills worked. and Ontario pointed out that they had great latitude to ignore Health Canada care guidelines, and announced the intention to do so. Experts observed that there was no solid evidentiary reason to require an ultrasound, and Health Canada dropped that requirement in April.
