Colby Cosh: Why Justin Trudeau's French elicits howls of rage

Thursday’s hot-off-the-press Post contained a short summary (by CP’s Giuseppe Valiante) of a recent academic paper about how Justin Trudeau’s handling of spoken French is regarded in Quebec. The anti-Trudeau hostility from the Quebec press is sometimes nonsensical even on its own terms. There is not really anything wrong with Trudeau’s Quebec French. And, of course, the son is paying for the sins of the father — who, like most other ambitious and well-travelled Quebeckers of his time, thought and said that demotic Quebec French was swinish and embarrassing. Justin does not sound like Pierre, and does not share his opinions about language or almost anything else, but in Quebec they hear Pierre when he talks.
