Has Canada inadvertently helped to strike a blow against the cause of assisted suicide in England and Wales? The upper house is taking its time juggling with the bill in committee, with over 1,000 amendments submitted for debate. In other words, the House of Lords, like our Senate, can only delay Commons legislation for so long, and no longer, under the constitution. (To a Canadian ear in 2026, this sounds almost as old-fashioned as having a House of Lords.) It specifically excludes mental illness alone as a grounds for receiving suicide assistance; Canada still does this for the moment, but only until March 17, 2027.
