Colby Cosh: Addicted to commuting? Canadian workers remain devoted to the office

None of it, I should specify, actually happens in bed (and relatively little of it involves actual writing). On Wednesday, Statcan released the last batch of new data from the 2016 Census, and it included a paper on commuting. In management and financial jobs, 38 per cent of all employed Americans did some work at home on a typical day. But there is a mystery here—perhaps hiding in the numbers, just beyond my layman’s grasp—that Statcan barely thought worthy of note. What if the industrialized world spent trillions of dollars allowing managers and knowledge workers to be liberated from cramped, ugly, fluorescent-lit cubicles—and the workers just refused to leave?
