At other times I have told people I demur “for professional reasons.” But very few columnists and reporters consider themselves barred from the voting booth. Electoral battles are, for now, fought over relatively small issuesIt is a purely personal practice, almost a habit. This means that the right to vote is important, not that everybody has to exercise it. When you vote, the opponents of one’s tribe of choice become personal adversaries in a way they otherwise aren’t. Even the small increment of loyalty involved in voting for a human interferes in a small way with my work, insofar as that work touches upon partisan politics.
