There’s already talk that Coco could challenge this year’s only big animated hit, Universal / Illumination’s Despicable Me 3 , and the $148 million total it collected this past July and August. And there are even whispers that the $235 million PRC gross earned in 2015 by Disney’s Zootopia could be a viable target for the new Pixar film. Pixar’s misjudgement of the new picture’s potential is understandable, because the studio has never had a truly successful release in China. In addition to phenomenal word-of-mouth, two key factors appear to be igniting Chinese moviegoers’ interest in Coco. It was also the main plot of the Indian import Dangal, which took in nearly $200 million from China's multiplexes last spring, a record for a non-English import in the territory.
