Cockroach infestation and rotten meat result in fine for Auckland food business

Boxes of rotten chicken, a cockroach infestation and an unclean shop has resulted in a $45,000 fine for an Auckland food retailer. During the inspection, the officers found the premises unclean, a heavy cockroach infestation, boxes of rotten chicken and meat, a “strong foul smell” from the boxes and unlabelled and uncovered food products. Kotigala said the rotten meat was left out because the butchery was being upgraded and the storage for meat was limited. However, he acknowledged the rotten meat should not have been kept in the freezer where fresh meat was stored. “This is a clear risk of contamination; indeed, it was acknowledged by the defendant that the rotten meat was placed near the chillers of fresh meat.
