Cochrane group prepares to welcome orphaned black bear cubs

CALGARY —Volunteers near Cochrane are once again working towards making a home for black bear cubs, eight years after the province put the brakes on rehabilitating the creatures. Lisa Dahlseide, a conservation biologist with CEI, said the province stopped the practice in 2010 and the last cubs were released in 2012. Last month the province gave the green light to again rehabilitate orphaned black bear cubs, in part because of pressure from residents near Springbank who wanted to save an injured bear who had been hit by a car. Under the new rules, cubs under 12 months of age will again have access to rehabilitation by groups such as CEI. Dahlseide said when they do rehabilitate cubs, one person is assigned to feed them every four hours in the early stages.
