Coal provided one in every eight electrons between April and June – the highest proportion in 13 years. After providing 19 per cent of the country’s power between April and June last year, geothermal’s share fell to 17 per cent. Traditionally, when the country’s renewable share falls, natural gas generation increases. But the electricity share provided by gas still fell from 15 per cent a year ago to under 13 per cent. It’s the second quarter in a row with high coal generation: between January and March, the units provided 10 per cent of the power on the national grid.
