Climate lens to apply to more Government decisions

Any projects likely to affect emissions must undergo a climate assessment when they go before Cabinet if the impact is big enough. The Government is in the process of changing the rules so that more Cabinet decisions go through a climate change assessment. The Green Party won a commitment to some kind of climate assessment for new laws in its confidence and supply agreement with Labour. Changes to the Emissions Trading Scheme were vetted for their climate impact. A briefing for Climate Change Minister James Shaw, released to climate campaigner Adam Currie under the Official Information Act, shows assessments were needed for two other proposals: an expansion of the landfill waste levy, and a clean car standard.
