Climate change produces significant impacts on water resources, food production: Egypt's Irrigation minister

CAIRO - 20 July 2022: The effects of climate change are already being felt, with impacts across several sectors, including water resources and food insecurity, said Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Mohamed Abdel Ati. The minister also said that Egypt is one of those most affected by climate change. This is due to rising sea levels and the impact of climate change and the extreme weather phenomena such as torrential rains, he added during his meeting with members of the Coordination of Youth Parties and Politicians to review measures and projects to mitigate the impact of climate change. The minister further said that 80 per cent of all disasters were caused by extreme weather and climate-related events such as floods and droughts. The government has prepared a strategy for water resources until 2050 at a cost of up to EGP 900 billion, added the minister during the meeting.
