What’s less well-known is that Sanders insisted on using a private jet as he toured the U.S. in 2016 as a surrogate campaigner for Hillary Clinton, who had topped him for the Democratic nomination. A new report by Politico quotes six former Clinton staffers and one other source as saying Sanders’ preference for flying private was a major source of tension between the two campaigns. The senator prevailed, and continued using private planes over the last two years, spending at least $342,000 on the aircraft, says Politico. Sanders ended up flying private on three separate multi-day trips in the last two months of the campaign. Her people are not nice,” Michael Briggs, a 2016 Sanders campaign spokesman, told Politico.
